Hello All! It's Erin's ghost writer again. She's too lazy to update, so here I am

Anywho, this weekend Jessica, Erin Andrew and I decided to head to Dublin to see the sights. I have to say, I was expecting more from it. Not that I didn't have fun with the group...I guess I just thought it would be more like London. But, it wasn't.

The first day we were there (we went Saturday overnight) we ate lunch and then headed to the Guinness factory. On the way we stopped at Christchurch which had a crypt in the basement (so cool), and then St. Patrick's Cathedral which was gorgeous. They actually have a spot outside where St. Patrick baptized people in the 5th century! It is amazing to me that history goes that far out here. I just can't wrap my mind around it sometimes. I wish we had castles and old buildings like this in the States. I guess I'm lucky to live in Boston where so much American History happened and some of the oldest buildings in the nation are located.

The factory (or storehouse) is pretty much in a really rundown area of Dublin...so the walk there was quite enjoyable. I felt like there wasn't enough in the factory to consume 5 floors. It was oddly spaced out. However, my highlight at the Guinness Factory (besides the free pint at the end) was the area where you can learn to build a 'Perfect Pint'. They actually teach you how to pour your own beer. It was funny because when it was my turn, the girl asked me if I had poured Guinness before. To which I replied that I had not, and she was surprised because I actually did it perfectly! I laughed. It must be the name. Something in my Irish blood must come out around a Guinness tap. I have to say, it was all the more enjoyable knowing that I had poured my own. We even got certificates.

After that we headed back to our hotel and changed because it was Jessica's sister's birthday and we decided to eat dinner to celebrate. We actually found an Italian place around the corner from our hotel that is semi-famous. There were tons of pictures on the wall with celebrities and the owner. I mean, big names like Scorsese (?), Robert Redford, SJP and Matthew Broderick...etc. I ordered a lamb shank that was so delicious that I think it ruined lamb for me for the rest of my life. It was literally falling off the bone and it melted in my mouth. I wanted more. I was so depressed when I was finished eating. Andrew ordered the same thing and wanted to gnaw on the bone, that's how good this lamb was. Homegrown and grass fed....oh my goodness.

I did enjoy Trinity College quite a bit. Erin, Andrew and I split off from Jess and her sister on Sunday morning and went to the College to see the Book of Kells (which is fantastically amazing!) and our tour guide was this really dreamy Irishman with curly blonde hair ala Simon Baker. I was a little bit in love with him, I'm not gonna lie. Then we went to St. Stephen's Green and shopping and we made it to the Jameson factory. That was also disappointing but offered a free Jameson after the tour. They actually have the original cat that patrolled the barley warehouse for mice stuffed because he was 'head cat'. He caught 23 mice a day. Gross. I just felt that the tour didn't need to be as long as it was. The Jameson was good though, I have never had it before and it was quite smooth I have to say.

Then today we had our official picture with the CJ for the brochure next year. We're also getting a copy of it (so I've heard) so hopefully it comes out nice. I'm sure it will because it's professional. It just sucked having to get up early to look even more presentable for this class than I already do. I was lucky to not have to iron.

Hello All!
Erin McGowan is busy right now, so I am here to write to you about her fantabulous study abroad experience in Ireland. It's pretty sad that she hasn't updated this thing in a while, which I informed her of as I was headed to this same website to update my own blog (Shannon International for any of you that care). She requested that I update hers because she is busy eating dinner.

Ireland is unbelievable. Not only is it beautiful but the people here are so warm and kind it's a real shock from being back in the States. We have all decided that we do not want to leave here. Ever. If only this program was for a whole semester instead of 6 weeks. Everyone that's here gets along great even though we are all from different schools. One of our professors was actually surprised by that fact because in previous years there were definite rifts between schools. I liken it to the animosity between the Jets and the Sharks.

Our apartment complex is right by the Corrib River and there is a really nice river walkway to run along and generally enjoy the river. The water is not as cold as one would assume and some of our group have even gone swimming. It's only a 10 minute walk to class, and from campus we can easily walk into town in about another 10-15 mins depending on how fast we're walking

The town of Galway itself is a great mix of travelers and locals, and all the pubs are very fun. There is live Irish music in most of them at least one day a week, and others have bands that play later on at night or DJs. (I have to say that it's very hard to describe all of this in one post without boring anyone who is reading this that I do not know)

There have been some school trips: one to the Aran Islands a few weeks ago, one on Friday to Connemara/Clifton, and one to the Cliffs of Moher that we missed because we went to London that weekend. London is amazing. Erin's already been so she was laughing at all of us and saying that she was probably taking the same pictures that she did last time. One funny thing though is that Erin's backpack got searched while we were waiting for the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. It was past the roped off area on the ground and it was stuffed with dirty clothes from the weekend and the police officer came up and made her open it. Quite funny. Apparently she looks suspicious.

Next weekend we're going to Dublin, should be good times. Other than that, folks, I don't really know what to say. I've enjoyed getting to know Erin. I think she's one of the funniest people I have met in a really long time. I will be sad when we part ways, considering she lives all the way in Texas. I'm trying to get her to call me when she's in Boston for the Boston Marathon this spring.

Hopefully she will update soon.

Phillies World Series merchandise is still in demand, but many are out of luck because they have sold out of many items. The easy question, why don't they produce more. Their answer...they just don't. That being said, because they order the same number of pieces for each team, we can determine which cities sell the most merchandise and which teams sell their pieces the quickest.

According to MLB, "the benchmark for sales occurred in 2004 when the Red Sox swept the Cardinals and won their first title in 86 years. No MLB city has matched that appetite until Phillies fans this year. "To give you a sense of the rate of the sell-through, I believe we were faster sold out on these caps than we were in 2004," Smith said."

I was out of town on business this past weekend at the Chicago Marathon. It was a great weekend and they provide a world class event; we learn a lot from this race each year. I suggest everyone run or watch this race in your lifetime. Like most road races, the energy of the runners and spectators is extremely contagious and is a special experience that everyone should have at least once in their lifetime.

Monster Truck

Last year, I experienced Monster Truck for the first time. To be honest, I never thought I would find myself at monster truck rally. However, after my 15 minutes of hating every minute of it, I got over the noise-induced sissy panic attack and LOVED IT. Lucky for me and the city of Houston, Monster Truck is coming back November 1 and the new ad is up an running.

The point of telling you all of this?

I made a new friend from Louisiana recently who is the
director/designer/editor for a production company and his first project was the Monster Truck Shootout (it's a good thing his first project didn't feed into a Texas stereotype). One of my older marathon board members, D, has spent the last few summers visiting with Gene Wilder in upstate New York. Gene happens to be married to Karen, an old flame of D's; and after D and Karen rekindled their friendship, D and his wife began to visit the couple each summer.

I discovered his connection to Wilder a little over a year ago and I have been jealous ever since. Anyone who knows me well, knows that Willy Wonka has always been my favorite movie and that I have spent way too many hours watching it over and over and over again.

Annnyway...back to the reason why I am posting this information... D watched Willy Wonka for the FIRST TIME the other day and shared this information with me. I was in shock. The first time??? How is that possible, especially when you are "friends" with the title character?? He also asked me after the movie when we were discussing it, if there was music in the film, but that is a completely other issue. Overall, I am not all that interested in hearing why each of you may not have seen this movie and I am not here to judge you on that decision slash I just did :) I am only interested in sharing this story so I can introduce others to some of the movie scenes and the trailer. I also hope to encourage some of you to check out this classic film. And of course, I hope people fall in love, like I did.

Tristan, by the way, how is that man-crush of yours coming along? I think you may have to fight Justin for him..as I recall he loves the man too. However, if you win, I am almost certain Dawkins will accept your invitation to be the best man at your wedding. I am assuming it will all be scheduled for half time on Dec. 28, 2008, right? I will be there with bells on.

Hurricane Relief Fund

The marathon has just added the Gulf Coast Relief Fund to their Run for a Reason charity program in order to encourage donations to the relief efforts surrounding the Gulf Coast. 10 things I learned during hurricane Ike...

You can always learn something new...even during a Hurricane.

People are stupid and selfish (well, I already knew this, it has just been reiterated).

If you are told there is a mandatory evacuation and if you do not leave you should write your social security # on your arm so you can be identified ANNND you still do not leave....you have something wrong with you.
It is great you feel content in stealing precious time from our rescuers who could be helping people those who obeyed the warnings and stayed in their towns and cities because they were told not to evacuate (I don't mean me, I mean those who need assistance). It is always great to put others in danger because you couldn't get your head out of your own ass. Way to prove to the world you are an idiot.
On a side note...FEMA, since they can't do anything productive after the storm, should create a system to provide pre-storm evacuation funds to those who would qualify for need.

The elected officials of various offices around this state speak GOOD.

The concrete channels where our water runs out of the city is called a Bayou. Pronounced by-u, not By-O or By-Ah
Feverously, is not a word. I believe the one you are looking for is feverishly.
When water begins to drain or go back to the sea, it is called receding, not residing.
Power will be RESTORED, not refurbished.

FEMA is a figment of our imagination.

Citizens of this country have NO faith in their government.

The following are two examples of stories citizens told to clear channel radio during the storm...

Listener 1: "This storm was different than anything I know. There were no thunders, there were no lightening, there were no tornadORS, some rain and lots of wind. I think that the government hasn't been saying anything about this strange storm and I think the government know more than they are telling us about it." This guy apparently thinks the government created Hurricane Ike.
Listener 2: "I own a carpet company and I can help many people down here in Sea brook. There are a lot of people with wet carpets and if I don't help them within the first 72 hours after they get wet, they will have much bigger problems. After 72 hours mold and disease starts to grow. The city won't let me in to help my neighbors even though the street is clear enough. They make me wait to fix these carpets and homes so I have to charge more and then they get more money from the taxes on each job. The government is keeping me out so they get more money from me and you." Now that is a theory.

When they tell you not to evacuate, you should ignore the advice and get the hell out of town, unless you enjoy living like a caveman.

Seriously...if you can, leave.

Despite the looters and haters running a muck in this city, there are some decent human beings on this planet.

Lots of people from all over the nation have flocked to Houston to help reopen stores, help distribution sites run smoothly, and help rebuild many areas of south east Texas that are in desperate need of all the assistance they can get.
We are so lucky to have those good hearted individuals!

People do not remember driver's ed. Remember when they taught us to treat a disabled traffic light as a four way stop sign.

If you are the only person in an office to leave everything in your office and not place your valuable computer and items in the safe room...your window will be the only one that gets blown out of that building.

AT&T is awful.

I switched to AT&T a few months ago and I have never had so many dropped calls in my entire 10 years of cell phone usage.

Hurricane Ike and my still service free phone are an added con to my "should I leave AT&T pros and cons" list.
Many people I know with other providers are chatting away on their cellys.

Starbucks should be on the list of essential businesses that must have power restored first.

I mean, really, hospitals, emergency centers, grocery stores, gas stations and Starbucks, seems simple enough.

I am sure there are a number of other important lessons I learned during this interesting experience. If you are interested, I can tell you over coffee, if you've got an hour or 5.

I am THRILLED to have power and water after 70+ fairly long hours. Overall, dad and I were VERY lucky, much luckier than many. The city of Houston is still not right and the coastal locations are a long way from any sense of normalcy. My thoughts go out to everyone who has been harmed by Ike.

I am well aware that the situation is not a laughing matter, but sometimes laughter can ease the stress and tension surrounding unfortunate circumstances. That being said...here are some crazy houstonians and galvestonians before the storm. Watching them live during the storm coverage made me laugh.

I have documented most of the storm and will be posting the photographs this week.

During the Eagles game on Sunday, I saw a ridiculous ad for the show "Ice Road Truckers." I thought the premise was, in a word, stupid. That evening I happened to skim the History channel and THERE IT WAS, Ice Road Truckers, BEGGING me to watch.

I really love the song and video "Single" from New Kids on the Block featuring Neyo. Neyo's style definitely stands out in the entire song and the NKOTB boys prove they still are able to bring hits.

A little perspective...

Last weekend, during his third marathon ever, 21 year old Kenyan, Samuel Kamau Wanjiru, won the gold medal in the 2008 Summer Olympics. Not only did Samuel win the gold, but he also set an olympic record by demolishing the previous record by over 2 minutes ( a life time in marathoning) and he did it on an extremely warm day (85 - 87 degrees, temparatures that are a race organizer's nightmare).

Samuel was the first male Kenyan, EVER, to win gold at the Olympics for the marathon.

Think about the last sentence for a moment (Samuel was the first male Kenyan, EVER, to win gold at the Olympics for the marathon). and now read the following fact:

Kenyans hold 57 of the top 100 times in men's marathon world performances.

57 of the top 100 men, men from everywhere in the world, and this is Kenya's first gold medal in the olympics. Due to my occupation, I am obviously way more intrigued by these sort of happenings than the next person, but it is pretty amazing what Samuel has done for his country. Various cities around the world have been privy to the outstanding performances of amazing Kenyan runners for years as they have won road races all over, but never has the stage been quite as big as the one set in Beijiing. Stated by Wanjiru himself, he "made history for Kenya."

While searching through the NYTimes I found an opinion from David Brooks and I meant to post it to the blog; unfortunately, I became side tracked by the real reason I was digging in the online paper, a silly constitutional law assignment, so here I am posting it after the fact. His article explains a little bit about who Joe Biden is today and some of the experiences that may have made him that way. Now that school has started and we have hired on two new employees at work, I think I can step back and take a breath. The hiatus has been way too long and although I don't have a list of things to touch on that have been going on, I am sure something will be worth writing about this fall.

First things first. The Olympics. I LOVE 'EM!

I am tuned in as much as the next person and I dvr as much as possible so I can stay up to all hours watching them. This is not such a problem when you are not a very good sleeper anyway, but it does seem like I should be more productive during the wee hours of evening/morning. I think everyone should watch the Olympics and if you don't, I must reconsider our relationship, jk, I just like them and if you don't that is okay too, I guess. Without your support I will have to continue cheering on my own when USA wins; I even chant U S A, U S A, by myself in my room, yikes, I know.

I have enjoyed the majority of the Olympic sports up to this point. There are a few that have not tickled my fancy - I am not a huge indoor volleyball fan, but maybe that is because I am a TERRIBLE volleyball player. I had no idea that Trampoline was an Olympic sport and now that I know, I can avoid it. I love the other exercises of gymnastics, I guess I was just big in to the trampoline when I was, let's say, 9 and I know it requires a great deal of skill, but something about it just is over my head (no pun intended). Here are the official rules for the trampoline. I guess you can read the rules, watch on youtube and decide for yourself.

As a heads up, the men's marathon is on this weekend! I am very excited to see the race now that half of my life goes to the preparation and management of a marathon.There is also the hope that we may get some of these amazing runners to Houston one day. Some have already been here, but I do not want to name names and jinx them. Check it out, if you are interested in seeing some amazing running - the average person completes a marathon (26.2 miles) in 4 - 6 hrs, these guys will be running it in about 2. I shall report back on the results.

True North is the company that has a commercial which explains their product as "an extraordinary nut snack" (the first time I saw the running ad I instantly thought an extraordinary nut what?!?) Well, all of the sudden they have a new commercial. The new line is "an extraordinary snack." I am fairly certain that commercials don't change after a few weeks of running. Obviously someone in marketing agreed with me that the original message was a bit ambiguous, leaning towards inappropriate. I win.

I know I know, I am long overdue on posting. I am working on some posts, but in the mean time, here is a little joke.

A frog goes into a bank and approaches the teller. He can see from her nameplate that her name is Patricia Whack. 'Miss Whack, I'd like to get a $30,000 loan to take a holiday.' Patty looks at the frog in disbelief and asks his name. The frog says his name is Kermit Jagger, his dad is Mick Jagger. It's okay, he knows the bank manager. Patty explains that he will need to secure the loan with some collateral. The frog says, 'Sure. I have this,' and produces a tiny porcelain elephant, about an inch tall, bright pink and perfectly formed. Very confused, Patty explains that she'll have to consult with the bank manager and disappears into a back office. She finds the manager and says, 'There's a frog called Kermit Jagger out there who claims to know you and wants to borrow $30,000, and he wants to use this as collateral.'

She holds up the tiny pink elephant. 'I mean, what in the world is this?' …..

The bank manager looks back at her and says...

Someonecards.com has become fairly popular over the last year for providing e-cards that don't sugar coat anything and get right to the point. I have been introduced to another similar card company that takes a similar approach. The company is Naughty Betty cards and I am definitely a fan. You actually have to go to the store to get the cards, but they are pretty funny and perfect for that friend that doesn't get offended by much. Above is a sample of the card. To you and me, these questions may seem rhetorical, but if you ask one of these classic questions to the clear channel staff, you may get an answer. I have seen a list of songs deemed inappropriate by Clear Channel following the September 11, 2001 attacks. The list consists of suggested songs that Clear Channel distributed to their radio stations following the 9/11 attacks because they were viewed as improper for broadcasting. The list includes such dangerous songs as "What a wonderful world," by Louis Armstrong and the Bangles "Walk like an Egyptian."

The employees who came up with this list should all be led out to the desert and.....jk, I am not that evil...they should simply be put in a dunce cap and be made to wear a sign that says "I take metaphors too literally and ruin fun for everyone." It is difficult to write this blog, as I am still shaking my head at the ridiculous thought this list existence (even thought it came out years ago and I am just discovering it in 2008).

Should we be concerned?

According to a University study, workplace anger has been increasing over time and people are not afraid to be rude and confrontational in the office. The study suggests that anger used to happen behind closed doors, but people are "losing their embarrassment over it." I am happy to say that I work in a small, currently 4 person, office where frustration (not anger) occurs, but anger is not a growing concern. My office mates are fairly honest with one another without any real anger and it works well for us.

I have many friends who work for large corporations and I would be curious to learn if they agree with the study. I am not referring to minor altercations.** I am talking about hitting, slapping and pushing! The articles says 2-3% of workers admit to hitting, slapping and pushing. 2-3%?? That is a lot of people that are going around and assaulting and battering people at work. Should people start worrying about going to work? Is this an issue for upper management to fix or are they part of the problem.

The marathon and half marathon sold out this morning; this is a record for the race. Last year we sold out September29th. The year before that we sold out November 30 and the year before that we sold out race weekend in January. So the phone is ringing like crazy and there are already 160 people on the waiting list. I am happy we sold out, because it may make the fall a little less crazy, but I also have finals coming up in a few weeks and it would be great if I had some time to study :\

Bitching 101

For those of you who know me well, you know that I can bitch and moan with the best of them. I have attempted to avoid bitching on this blog, but this I have to tell.

I had a wonderful time at the wedding in KY, but my departure was anything but sweet. I ended up getting stuck in the airport for 10 hours on Sunday and it took me an additional 10 hours to get home on Monday. Lexington is beautiful in every aspect except the size of their airport. Not only was my flight delayed multiple times and then finally canceled on Sunday, but I was bumped off of multiple flights on Monday morning. On Sunday, I was lucky, Chris Schwarz ( a dear friend from U of R) was also stuck in the airport for many hours, and he may have even had it worse than I did Sunday. He was placed on the plane for hours just sitting on the tarmac, until the pilot finally decided to go back to the gate. I was excited to say the least to see a familiar face for some time, he finally was able to get out around 6ish. Once he had left, I waited until I was canceled around 9pm.

The airport was small enough that at one point I was the ONLY person sitting in the airport Monday morning, I do not know where the flight representatives had disappeared to, but I was all alone for a good 2 hours before I finally was shipped to Cincinnati where I fought for a seat on the next flight to Houston.

On a positive note, I was able to watch some of the Euro 2008 from the airport bookstore. Viva Espana!

Needless to say, I am happy to be back in Houston and I even made it back in time for class.

Well, that is my rant for the day and hopefully for some time. I feel better, don't you?

The wedding was SO much fun. It was one of the best I have ever attended. The bride and groom looked amazing, the weather turned out great and my favorite part of the evening was when the dark tent became filled with fireflies. It was really amazing! I was so lucky to spend the weekend with some of my best best friends! I will add some more photos soon!

I started working at the marathon 1 year, 8 months, 23 days and 15 hrs ago, but who is counting. I started with three other newbies. In May, Brandis quit after being out on maternity leave, Jan left last week for Iowa following her husband's job, and Lucas is currently out on an interview. I thought I would be the first to go, when in fact I may be the last woman standing. Is it lonely out on this ledge? Nah. I only have one question. Isn't their a bonus for something like this?
